Since we seem to be heavy on airplane content today here on Oppositelock, I thought I’d bring the automotive and aeronautic worlds together (plus ships!) with a short post about Navy Jeeps.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so go read that.
TL;DR: CJs were used to help tow jets around, including on carriers, and since they were there already they started being used as Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) (effectively, starter motors).

Thus proving that Jeeps were everywhere in WWII. I don’t have a picture handy, but the Warbird area at Airventure is set up like a WWII military camp, with camouflage tents etc etc. There are a few Jeeps running around the place, along with a few other military vehicles. Very cool stuff.

I’m not familiar with Airventure, will have to visit. I’d like to take the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail someday in my Jeep, shouldn’t be too hard to make a side trip.

Low range acceleration must be hilarious with those tiny wheels.

Well, I certainly enjoyed that second video! And it had jeeps in it, too! Neat mix of aircraft: Grumman F9F, Douglas AD1, Vought F4U. That was a great video.

Ooh, and an AD-4W early warning radar Skyraider. That one required a little hunting. I was unaware of that variant. Neat!

Only 158 built. Makes me wonder what other rare airplanes you could randomly discover by watching old videos.

A lot. That was a real transitional time. You had mixes of jets and props on deck, you had nascent airborne radar systems that didn’t have dedicated aircraft to carry them. Same with ASW systems. In fact, the first dedicated ASW system was the Grumman AF Guardian, which was actually two planes, one with the radar and the other with the weapons, a hunter/killer team. The 50s-60s is my favorite era of aviation, actually.
